Emmy Awards 2012: Full list of nominees

The 64th annual Primetime Emmy Award nominations were announced on Thursday, July 19 in Los Angeles by the ceremony’s host, Jimmy Kimmel, and Kerry Washington of the ABC series “Scandal.”

They were joined by Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Chairman and CEO Bruce Rosenblum. The Emmys ceremony is set to air live from L.A. Live’s Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 23 at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT on ABC.

The 1960s-themed AMC show “Mad Men,” which has won the Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series every year since it premiered in 2007, earned another nod in the category, racking up a total of 17 nominations in total. The FX mini-series “American Horror Story” earned 17 nods as well – the most given to a program in the genre in a single year since “Roots” garnered 37 in 1977.

The PBS series “Downton Abbey” is also nominated for the title and has a total of 16 nominations this year. Stars Hugh Bonneville and Michelle Dockery earned their first nods for their role as Robert, Earl of Grantham and Lady Mary Crawley.

Other first-time nominees include Zooey Deschanel of the FOX comedy series “New Girl,” “Blossom” alum Mayim Balik who stars in “The Big Bang Theory,” Damian Lewis of Showtime’s “Homeland,” Lena Dunham of HBO’s “Girls,” Kevin Costner and Bill Paxton of the History Channel mini-series “Hatfields & McCoys” and Benedict Cumberbatch of the PBS mini-series “Sherlock: A Scandal in Belgravia (Masterpiece).

Nicole Kidman and Clive Owen of the HBO movie “Hemingway & Gellhorn” and Julianne Moore, who played Sarah Palin in the HBO film “Game Change,” also earned their first Emmy nods. “Hemingway & Gellhorn” received a whopping 15 nods.

“American Idol” did not earn an Emmy nomination this year for Outstanding Reality-Competition Program, while it’s competitor, the NBC singing contest “The Voice,” earned its first nod.

ABC sitcom “Modern Family” has won the Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series every year since its 2009 debut and is nominated again this year, racking up a total of 14 nods. NBC’s “30 Rock” earned the most nominations – 30 in total. Joan Cusack and Uma Thurman are nominated for their guest roles in Showtime’s “Shameless” and NBC’s “Smash.”
