The news comes a day after the release of the 44-year-old’s new album, “Write Me Back,” and a day before the release of his autobiography, “Soulacoaster: The Diary of Me.”

“While on his way to New York this morning to celebrate the publication of his long-awaited memoir ‘SoulaCoaster,’ multi-platinum R&B superstar R. Kelly was taken ill and had to return to Chicago for medical treatment,” his spokesperson said in a statement obtained by OnTheRedCarpet.com. “Initial indications are that he is suffering from complications from surgery he had last year to treat an abscess on his vocal cords.”

“As a result, Kelly has had to cancel appearances on “The Jimmy Fallon Show” and NBC’s “Today” as well as a book party that was being held in his honor,” the rep added. “It is unclear how long Kelly may be sidelined.”

In July 2011, R. Kelly was rushed to a Chicago hospital after complaining about throat pain. Doctors drained an abcess in one of his tonsils.

R. Kelly is a three-time Grammy winner and has sold more than 35 million records worldwide. He is known for commercial hits such as “I Believe I Can Fly,” which was released in 1996. His 11th studio album, “Write Me Back,” hit stories on Monday and contain tracks such as “Share My Love” and “Feelin’ Single.”

His memoir was co-written by David Ritz and tells of R. Kelly’s life as a child, when he discovered he had a learning disability that made him unable to read or write, and his journey in music – from his days as a street performer in Chicago to the artist he is today.

The singer was originally scheduled to appear on the “Today” show and at a book signing at a Barnes & Noble in New York on Thursday and on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” on Friday.
