Raila Odinga State Funeral Underway in Bondo Amid Heavy Security and Mourning

(NAIROBI, Oct. 2025) – Kenya is mourning the death of one of its major political figures, Raila Odinga. The former Prime Minister died on October 15, 2025, at the age of 80 from a cardiac arrest in India and is currently being honored with a state funeral in Bondo, which is in Western Kenya, his home area. Events Leading to the Funeral

Raila Odinga suffered a cardiac arrest on the morning of October 15th, 2025, while at the Sreedhareeyam Ayurvedic Eye Hospital in Kerala, India, when he collapsed while taking a morning walk after receiving treatment there for diabetes, hypertension and chronic kidney disease while being treated at this Ayurvedic Hospital. Upon reports of his passing came to light, African leaders, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu, paid tribute to Odinga and recognized him for his regional and international stature.

Kenyan President William Ruto announced a national mourning period all week leading up to the funeral, making October 17 a public holiday and ordering Kenyans to lower flags to half-staff where they had the authority to do so. Raila Odinga’s body was transported by airplane from India to an airport in Nairobi where it was received by thousands of supporters at the airport, who quickly overtook the advantages of the Airport where it was located. The state funeral is scheduled to take place as planned, and the authorities across jurisdictions adjusted security knowingly within and across the events requiring increased public security, and thereafter increasing public attendance with the change and how anticipated attendees would adjust in light of disruptions to the ceremonial events.

To primary memorials/events, the deceased, on behalf of the family members was escorted to Kisumu for a final viewing before the processional funeral service could transport the body back to the family estate in Bondo, for burial – though many Kenyans understood all 2 groups who were present for allows them a respectful manner to formally say goodbye to their pioneering figure and hope for a future.  For some Kenyans paid tribute by paying final respects, Odinga was final respect honor – some, like William Ruto, finalize an era.
