Grokipedia Launch: Musk’s AI Encyclopedia Challenges Wikipedia With Nearly 900,000 Articles

San Francisco, October 28, 2025 – Elon Musk has officially launched Grokipedia, an AI-powered encyclopedia that aims to rival Wikipedia. Grokipedia, which is owned by Musk’s artificial intelligence company xAI, officially went live with a promise to create a “truthful and independent alternative” to mainstream reference sites.

However, the launch was just as dramatic as its founder’s reputation: the site crashed on launch day, which sparked a heated debate about reliability, editorial standards, and the impact on digital knowledge creation.

A Bold Entrance and Immediate Challenges

Grokipedia v0.1 launched on grokipedia.com, with 885,279 articles, many of which are generated by xAI’s Grok chatbot which is trained on real-time data. Preview users noticed the minimalist design: a basic search bar, a dark background, and simple article layouts. Musk promoted the platform as a quantum leap past Wikipedia, a platform Musk has repeatedly disparaged as being laden with “editorial bias,” often stemming from traditional media.

The demand and interest immediately overwhelmed the servers and caused the website outages on Monday night, before coming back online with all-new content later that night. “The launch is just the beginning. Version 1.0 will be ten times better. This is a necessary step toward xAI’s goal of understanding the Universe,” Musk posted on X (formerly Twitter).

What is the Difference between Wikipedia and Grokipedia?

Rather than Wikipedia’s global volunteer community, Grokipedia uses Grok, an AI model, to generate and manage all of the articles. As a result, the user will have an engaging, yet Wikipedia-like page, with all of the text synthesized from AI. The breadth of articles includes both the banal – Taylor Swift, the World Series – and claiming verification by Grok itself, with the date of the verification or review.

More significantly to the creative commons world, the users cannot edit the Pages directly. But rather must request edits and new articles through Grok, which will make the determination to edit, or explain why it cannot improve the article. This approach demonstrates Musk’s dismissiveness of crowdsourced and editorial control, while also attempting to put “truth” through synthesized learning from large language models.

Criticism and Controversy

Critics quickly noticed after launch that many of the articles on Grokipedia appeared quite similar, if not directly copied from, Wikipedia, raising questions of originality and whether similar articles, if intentionally copied, could actually be protected by fair use. Musk responded to these critiques by telling followers that there was “still more work to purge propaganda,” echoing his complaints about Wikipedia’s alleged political bias for a long time.

Several technology reporters took a different view, saying that Grokipedia is a simply a spin-off of Wikipedia by design and content but with a very “right-leaning” ideology and mission. In a series of articles, Wired and CNBC called attention to the platform’s clear emphasis on undermining “mainstream narratives” and including far-right talking points or missing information related to Musk’s own controversies.

A few industry observers were quick to warn of potential issues here. Regardless of sophistication, large language models are particularly prone to hallucination and bias. The issues around transparency and accuracy remain as Grokipedia is effectively avoiding clear sourcing chains and real human editorial review.

User Experience and Early Impressions

The early reviewers noted that the homepage felt clean, modern, and less cluttered than Wikipedia. In fact, articles feature headings and text presentation only, with no images or sidebars. Citations are only supplied at the end of each section, but links to source materials are limited. Some entries even note “AI verified” or “fact checked” with date stamps, however, there is nothing further confirming the verification process for these claims.

Despite claiming to offer “the whole truth and nothing but the truth,” Grokipedia is currently purposefully non-editable by any users, while Wikipedia offers a community-based approach where any individual can correct or dispute an article.

Industry Impact: Changing the Information Landscape

The launch of Grokipedia comes amid falling traffic for Wikipedia, as digital audiences seem to be gravitating toward answers or synthesis of information capable through artificial intelligence. Large technology companies and Universities have already begun to talk and think through the lens of whether platforms like Grokipedia could impact fact-checking, search returns, or even access for millions of students.

Musk is convinced that is only the first phase. “We may never be perfect,” he claims, “but we will always be working toward that goal.” For critics, however, the question remains whether centralized AI will offer a more accurate and unbiased encyclopedia than competing for the same type of old editorial, or will it just mean instilling a new set of technological concerns?

Challenges and Next Steps

Grokipedia, as it prepares for upcoming features, faces significant challenges:

  • Ensuring article originality, transparent fact checking with citations, and a wide range of topics.
  • Managing accusations of bias, AI hallucinations, and unverifiable claims.
  • Gaining credibility from academics, journalists, and educators already accustomed to collaborative editing and scrutiny.

With over 885,000 entries and rapidly approaching one million, Musk’s platform is about to make an impact on digital reference, but if it can attain the level of reliability and global accessibility that Wikipedia provides is still an unanswered question.
