A New York City Thanksgiving isn’t just the traditional celebration, it is also a time for large crowds of people to gather for a variety of events and activities that make New York City the center of attention. There are many ways to celebrate including the world-famous Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, rooftop dinners, family-friendly festivities, as well as low-key celebration with friends and family in their local neighborhoods.

Regardless of whether you’re a tourist visiting for the first time or a local resident that will be spending the Thanksgiving holiday weekend in NYC, planning ahead of time is crucial to enjoy this long holiday weekend.

The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

Most people start Thanksgiving off with the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. This year’s 99th Annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City is still considered one of the biggest events during this holiday. On 11-26-2025, the parade begins at 8:30 a.m. on Central Park West and 77th Street on the Upper West Side of Manhattan; it will travel through the city and end up at Macy’s Herald Square at 34th Street around noon. There will be a lot of people lining up to see the parade’s route before it begins, waiting for the following items: 34 large balloons, 4 smaller balloons, 28 floats, 33 clowns, and 11 marching bands. At the end of the parade, Santa Claus will appear.

A couple of popular places to watch the parade are Central Park West near the start of the parade and Sixth Avenue near Midtown; however, these locations fill up quickly. For those who want more comfortable accommodations, some hotels and restaurants offer brunch packages that include breakfast, open bars, and seats away from the cold November weather.

Parade Viewing Brunches and Premium Experiences

A variety of locations are now hosting curated experiences for Thanksgiving Parades:

  • There are a few Midtown Hotels and Lofts in the Sixth Avenue district with ticket options to sit up front or elevated along with breakfast buffets being family friendly.
  • All-inclusive packages at Gotham Hall near Herald Square include gourmet food, open bar service, and outdoor reserved viewing spaces where close-up views of parades occur.
  • Restaurants like Gabriel‘s and Central Park gallery venues advertising, “direct views” of the floats & balloons offer multiple course menus along with their offerings. There are still others located in premium spaces on Sixth Avenue.

Although the price point for these experiences may be high and they tend to sell out quickly, many visitors prefer them because they allow shelter, guaranteed sight lines (you’ll see everything), and provide an environment that is fun and exciting for those who wish to witness the Thanksgiving Day Parade without the mania of battling through large crowds on the sidewalks.

Classic Holiday Dining: Where to Eat Thanksgiving Dinner

For those who like to gather together around the dinner table, but don’t want to do the cooking themselves, New York City’s restaurant scene offers plenty of no-cook options.

  • For example, The Plaza Hotel offers Thanksgiving menus through the Champagne Bar and Palm Court featuring everything from free-range roasted turkey plates to an afternoon tea featuring autumn-themed desserts and sandwiches.
  • Haven Rooftop, located in the Midtown area, also has a three-course Thanksgiving prix fixe menu including items such as roast turkey, NY strip steak, salmon, and pumpkin cheesecake for dessert.
  • Carmine’s in Times Square specializes in large platters of food made in the Southern Italian family style that are perfect for families and large groups of diners who may not be as attached to the traditional turkey.
  • Some other neighborhood locations such as Ellington on Broadway, also offer multi-course Thanksgiving menus to give visitors and residents of the Upper West Side an intimate and local experience.

Please note that reservations are highly recommended for prime evening seating, especially in venues that are close to parade routes or other major tourist attractions.

Family-Friendly Activities and Neighborhood Events

In addition to the parade, Thanksgiving in New York City is filled with events geared toward families:

  • The Thanksgiving Day Parade at Randall’s Island and many parks throughout the boroughs feature holiday-themed runs and charity events.
  • The Children’s Museum of Manhattan and the Wave Hill Center are producing art and nature-based experiences that emphasize gratitude.
  • Throughout the Thanksgiving holiday, the New York Botanical Garden will unveil its winter activities, including the “Nightmare Before Christmas” light trail, while public squares will host tree-lighting ceremonies and pop-up markets.

These options will provide families with a wide array of alternative ways to celebrate Thanksgiving other than being in Midtown with throngs of people.

Practical Tips for Celebrating Thanksgiving in NYC

  • Be sure to arrive at the parade very early. Many fans will arrive before dawn to secure the best place to view the parade from the curb.
  • Dress for the cold weather and wear layers. It gets cold and windy in New York in November along the parade route.
  • Public transit is highly recommended due to the numerous street closures and heavy traffic, making driving virtually impossible.
  • To avoid disappointment, make reservations for brunch or dinner weeks in advance, especially in the areas around Central Park and Times Square.
  • Explore the neighborhoods of Brooklyn Heights, Astoria, and Harlem to dine in a more casual environment and participate in local Thanksgiving-related events.
