The BET Awards routinely referred to as “Culture’s Biggest Night” marked its 25th Anniversary in 2025 with a jubilant display of accomplishments of Black excellence and achievements in Music, Film, Television, and Sports.
Celebrated on June 9th at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles the event was stocked with legendary performers, rising stars, and fans.
The evening was filled with unforgettable performances, heartfelt tributes, and applause for the artists and leaders, both established and emerging that will decide the future of Black culture.
A Significant Anniversary: Legacy Meets Future
Since its founding in 2001, the BET Awards has become a hallmark event; one of the best ways to celebrate, recognize and display Black excellence and creativity. The 2025 ceremony hosted by comedian and actor Kevin Hart not only commemorated 25 years of the impact of cultural presence but also celebrated BET’s 45th year as a network.
The confluence of these significant stamped the impact that Black entertainment can leave on the world and the need for networks to have platforms to showcase, highlight and amplify Black storytelling.
Star-Studded Winners & Unforgettable Moments
Kendrick Lamar was the unquestionable star of the evening, winning four major awards, including Album of the Year of GNX, Best Male Hip Hop Artist, Video of the Year for his viral hit “Not Like Us,” and his collaboration as Best Collaboration with SZA with their track “Luther.”
Lamar also shared Video Director of the Year title with longtime collaborator Dave Free, confirming that he was an artist with vision and a serious creative perspective.
In R&B, SZA took home Best Female R&B/Pop Artist, while Chris Brown was Best Male R&B/Pop Artist. Future & Metro Boomin received Best Group thanks to their collaborative album success, and breakout artist Leon Thomas was named Best New Artist.
Doechii’s momentum continued as she was crowned Best Female Hip Hop Artist and made sure to use part of her acceptance speech to shine light on immediate social issues, like the recent immigration protests in Los Angeles.
The night also gave recognition to accomplishments outside of music. Denzel Washington and Cynthia Erivo received honors for Best Actor and Actress while Luther: Never Too Much was crowned Best Movie. Blue Ivy Carter received the YoungStars Award, and sports legends Angel Reese and Jalen Hurts were named Sportswoman/Sportsman of the Year.
Electrifying Performances and Uplifting Speeches
While the 2025 BET Awards featured amazing performances to emphasize the expansive possibilities of Black artistry, performers that were confirmed to perform included fan-favorite artists like Teyana Taylor, GloRilla, Leon Thomas, Playboi Carti and Lil Wayne.
The show featured a tribute to the renowned music video countdown show 106 & Park, which connected the past to the present state of Black entertainment.
One of the highlights of the night was Jamie Foxx, who made a speech about recovering from a stroke. Foxx said, “You don’t go through something like that and not say your testimony,” as he encouraged the audience to learn from his recovery and recognize their strengths, while reflecting on what they are grateful for.
A Night of Unity and Resilience
In Los Angeles, where tensions were running high due to protests against immigration enforcement, and police were on heightened alert, the BET Awards continued as planned. To be a part of an event that espouses community gives you hope that plays out on the screen, throughout the theater, and throughout the night for all present artists and attendees.
The awards centered on a night of hope and achievement, but for those present, it felt like strength working against isolation for change.
The Future of Black Excellence
As the BET Awards continues to celebrate 25 years of achievements in promoting Black culture, it is an enduring place to recognize, acknowledge, uplift, and serve to inspire talent, community and, of course, Black excellence for another 25 years.
The BET Awards 2025 in Los Angeles accomplished that and more as it upheld the standard of blending art, music, and storytelling for with the purpose to uplift, unite, stimulate change and inspire others to do the same.
