Copacabana’s new tradition of free mega‑shows

Shakira’s concert is the latest in a string of free, city‑backed mega‑shows that have turned Copacabana into a recurring stage for global pop superstars.

Early reports indicated the night passed largely without serious incident, despite the sheer number of people on the beach.

A global superstar at a career crossroads

The Rio show comes at a time when Shakira is both reaffirming her status as a global pop mainstay and reframing her public image. After a period marked by tabloid coverage of her separation from Piqué and legal battles over tax issues in Spain, Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran has been widely interpreted as a turning‑the‑page record, blending reggaeton, pop and rock with lyrics about betrayal, self‑respect, and financial independence.
