Tending to the black and blue

The northwestern corner of Madison Square Park in Manhattan, New York City on a summer morning

Summer can be a time of great activity for adults and children alike. Whether it involves sporting events or other hobbies, memories are made by the dozens in these warm months. However, there is a potential hidden danger lurking behind all of these fun moments, the risk of injury.  Some of these occurrences may be minor and able to be tended to at home. The more serious cases though may land a patient at the doctor’s office or even in the chair of one of the many oral surgeons in New Jersey.

Heat Related

One of the leading causes of injury and illness during the summer months is the heat and humidity that accompany the beautiful weather. Keep in mind during the summer; New Jersey can often reach temperatures averaging in the high 70s and low 80s, although it is not uncommon to find readings in the 90s or even 100s.  When planning outdoor activities, like a hike through the Pine Barrens or a trip down the shore, it is important to keep an eye on the temperature gauge. It is also important to understand the potential impact the heat may have on your body as some people can be more susceptible to illness or injury than others.

If you suspect a person is suffering from a heat related problem it is important to get them treated as quickly as possible. This can be accomplished by spraying them with water or applying ice to their pulse points after removing them from the heat. Typically heat related illnesses can be treated at home. However, if the patient starts exhibiting further signs of distress or has an underlying medical condition that can be worsened by the heat it is important to get them to a medical facility as quickly as possible.

Lower Body

Lower body injuries can be common occurrences during the warm summer months. These can result from a variety of different situations, such as twisting a knee while playing basketball. They can also result from work type situations like cleaning up the debris left by one of the many summer storms that may roll through the state.

The severity and location of a lower body injury will greatly dictate the type of treatment it requires. Simple incidents like twisting your foot while running can be treated at home using the Rest Ice Compression Elevation method.

Upper Body

Just as with our lower body, our upper body also has various locations that can become susceptible to injury.  Our shoulders, wrists, and fingers may bore the brunt of the pain. However, our face may not always escape the danger. Many athletes will wear protection around and even on their face while participating in sport. However, accidents and facial injuries do still occur. An injury like taking a street hockey puck to the mouth may result in a visit to an oral surgeon in New Jersey who will be able to assess and repair the damage.

The thought of having to treat the black and blue may not be a pleasant one. It is important to be prepared though and make sure that you always have an emergency plan in mind. Remember to participate safely so that enjoyable summer memories can be made by all.
