CONAKRY, Guinea — A massive mound of waste collapsed at Guinea’s largest landfill after heavy rain early Sunday, burying nearby homes and tents in the capital, Conakry, and killing at least 30 people, authorities said.
The collapse occurred around 2 a.m. in the Dar Es Salam neighborhood of Gbessia commune, where heavy overnight rain saturated a mountainous heap of refuse at the city’s main open-air dump. The waste slid into surrounding residential areas, destroying shelters and trapping residents beneath debris.
Guinea’s government said 30 people were confirmed dead, six were seriously injured and 16 more suffered lighter injuries. Rescue teams, backed by military personnel and excavators, continued searching the site for survivors and victims who may remain buried.
Other reports put the injury toll at 22, including six people in critical condition, while the BBC reported at least 31 deaths. The government’s 30-death figure was the latest official count available, and casualty totals could change as recovery operations continue.
The disaster has brought renewed attention to living conditions around Conakry’s Dar Es Salam landfill, a vast open-air site that authorities had planned to close on the same day the collapse occurred. Residents near the dump had been warned to leave, but many remained in the area when the landslide struck.
A predawn collapse
The landslide took place in darkness, when many people were asleep.
Heavy rain began falling around 2 a.m., washing over the landfill’s unstable surface and contributing to the collapse, according to the government and civil-protection authorities.
The Dar Es Salam site is Conakry’s largest landfill, receiving enormous volumes of household and commercial waste from a city of millions. Over time, trash has accumulated into a steep, mountain-like mound beside densely populated neighborhoods where some residents live in vulnerable structures.
When the refuse collapsed, it moved into nearby tents, shacks and homes. Witnesses said the mass of waste was large enough to bury an apartment building along with more fragile dwellings.
The timing worsened the impact. Residents had little opportunity to escape, and emergency responders had to work through rain, darkness, unstable debris and the hazardous conditions common at open waste sites.
A resident, Cire Diallo, told reporters at the scene that five of her children were killed in the collapse.
Her account reflects the human scale of a disaster that has devastated families in a community already living alongside one of the city’s most dangerous environmental hazards.
Officials did not immediately provide a full list of the dead or identify all of the destroyed homes. Search operations remained underway Sunday, and authorities said additional people could still be trapped.
Rescue operations continue
The Guinean government said it had mobilized “significant human and material resources” to search for survivors, assist the injured and recover bodies.
Rescuers used excavators and other heavy equipment to clear the waste and debris. Such work is inherently difficult because heavy machinery can help move large volumes of material but may also pose risks if survivors remain trapped beneath unstable sections of the landfill.
Emergency crews must also contend with the dangers of landfill rescue operations: decomposing waste, sharp debris, contaminated water, unstable ground, fumes and the possibility of further slides.
The scale of the collapse led authorities to bring in multiple agencies, including civil protection, municipal officials, security forces, and military engineering personnel.
The injured were transported for medical care. The government said it had taken measures to ensure treatment for those hurt and assistance for affected families.
Dienabou Touré, Guinea’s minister of territorial administration and decentralization, said the government would relocate families remaining near the landfill.
The commitment is likely to be closely watched. Residents living around the dump have faced danger for years, and relocation plans can be difficult to carry out when families have limited housing alternatives and depend on the area for work, informal recycling or proximity to the city.
A dump scheduled to close
The Dar Es Salam landfill was due to close Sunday, according to Lt. Col. Baldé Mamadou Bailo, sanitation officer for Guinea’s military engineering battalion.

Officials did not say how many families had been ordered to move, how many had complied, or what housing assistance had been provided before the collapse.
For local residents, the questions are immediate: where will displaced families sleep, how will they recover lost possessions and documents, and whether the closure will finally lead to a safer waste-management system.
For the government, the disaster creates pressure to explain why people were still living in danger near a landfill scheduled to close.
A history of danger at Dar Es Salam
Sunday’s collapse was not the first deadly incident at the Dar Es Salam landfill.
A landslide at the same site in 2017 killed at least 10 people, according to the BBC. Other reports said earlier torrential rains caused a mudslide that killed at least eight people.
The previous disaster should have been a warning about the risks of allowing residential communities to remain beside a large and unstable waste mound.
Landfills can become especially dangerous during heavy rains. Water adds weight to waste, weakens the material beneath it, increases pressure inside the pile, and can turn loose refuse into a rapidly moving slurry. If drainage systems are inadequate, rainwater can accumulate and destabilize slopes.
Open-air dumps also tend to lack the engineered safeguards used in modern sanitary landfills, such as controlled layering, compaction, drainage, retaining structures, gas management, and regular slope monitoring.
In Conakry, the scale of urban growth and limited waste infrastructure have placed added pressure on Dar Es Salam. Residents and environmental advocates have long warned that unmanaged waste accumulation creates risks not only of landslides but also of disease, fires, groundwater contamination and flooding.
Sunday’s tragedy has turned those long-term concerns into a national emergency.
Conakry’s waste-management challenge

Opposition leader and former Prime Minister Cellou Dalein Diallo, who lives in exile, called the incident a tragedy and said authorities should conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances and draw the necessary conclusions.

Heavy rain was the immediate trigger identified by authorities, but the wider context includes increasingly intense rainfall risks across many parts of West Africa.
Climate change can intensify the water cycle, allowing warmer air to hold more moisture and increase the potential for heavy downpours. The government has not linked the dump collapse to climate change, and no one rainfall event can be directly related to global warming without specific scientific investigation.
