Bob Marley dies: This Day In History

Raggae music icon Robert Nester Marley, aka Bob Marley, died on the 11th May 1981.

He died after succumbing to terminal cancer at the age of 36.

Born Robert Nester Marley, is known worldover for his socalist and revolutionary songs that inspired many African people and societies especially those grappling with colonisation, injustice and slavery.

In Zimbabwe Marley remains a historic figure after he graced the country’s first Independence Day celebrations held 32 years ago at Rufaro Stadium in Harare which remains engraved in the minds of many. The event was held on the 17th April 1980 and stretched across midnight marking Zimbabwe’s first morning out of British colonialism.

Zimbabweans will this Saturday join the rest of the world in commemorating the life of the late reggae guru at the Harare Gardens in a family celebration that
