In the early hours of June 13, 2025, Israel launched a broad series of airstrikes against Iran, hitting critical nuclear sites, military sites, and Iranian senior leadership in a move described by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Israeli media as a “decisive” response to an “imminent threat” to Israel’s survival.
Operation “Rising Lion”, as Israel has called this multi-target attack, is one of the largest escalations in the now decades-long conflict between Iran and Israel and has prompted fears of a wider regional war, along with calls for de-escalation around the world.
The Range and Consequences of the Strikes
The Israeli military operation struck over 100 different targets throughout Iran by about 200 fighter jets, including the Natanz uranium enrichment facility, which is a crucial part of Iran’s nuclear program. The strikes also hit missile production sites and the headquarters of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in Tehran.
Iranian state media reported that the commander of the IRGC Hossein Salami was killed in the strikes and several nuclear scientists, and there is unverified information that several kids were killed in a strike that hit a residential area in Tehran. At least 50 injuries are also reported.
Israeli officials indicated that the operation was preemptive and based on intelligence that Iran had moved significantly closer to acquiring a nuclear weapon and could potentially have the means of producing several nuclear weapons within days.
“We are at an important moment in history for Israel,” Netanyahu stated in a recorded message. “This operation will last as long as it takes to rid us from this threat.”
Iran’s Response and Potential for Escalation
Within hours of the Israeli operation, Iran responded with over 100 explosive drones launched at Israel, indicating that an exchange of attacks and counterattacks may become a prolonged and risky cycle.
Israeli air defense systems were activated in the country, as air raid sirens rang through major cities, including Tel Aviv. Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) indicated that they planned for this situation and were working around the clock to intercept the incoming drone threats.
Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei condemned Israel and warned of “serious consequences” and stated that Israel would face a “bitter fate” for its aggression.
The Iranian regime also issued renewed threats about further retaliation, indicating that the conflict may escalate out of control.
International Responses and Diplomatic Engagements
The international reaction to the escalation was alarm. United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres called for “maximum restraint” to avoid a “slide into deeper conflict” and condemned the escalation of military actions in the Middle East.
Oman, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar, among others, condemned Israel’s strikes as an escalation that was reckless, dangerous, threatening regional stability and violating international law.
The United States was informed by Israel of the operation, but was not involved with it. The United States took steps immediately to protect U.S. personnel in the region. Secretary of State Marco Rubio clearly stated that U.S. was not involved with the strikes, and warned Iran to not target U.S. interests, or personnel.
President Donald Trump was negotiating a new nuclear deal with Iran, and affirmed that he wished to assist with diplomatic engagement, but was aware that the world was in greater risk for a larger conflict.
The Human Cost and the Threat to Civilians
Apart from the implications geopolitically, the strikes took a toll on innocent lives. The loss of children and innocent civilian lives in Tehran and attacking residential areas have drawn condemnation and raised questions about the proportionality of Israel’s responses.
Elevated risks are evident for the millions of civilians in both countries. Civilian lives will continue to escalate, as long as fighting occurs.
Unknowns and seeking restraint
As Israel and Iran prepare for more confrontation, the rest of the globe watches with fear. The lines of the conflict remind us of the real risk of a much larger war involving regional and global powers with implications for international security.
Diplomatic processes are underway to de-escalate current conditions, but the elements of successful peace are unknown.
Israel strikes Iran have initiated a risky new phase in the Middle East conflict, as both sides continue to trade lethal blows and threaten retaliation. The international community is urging restraint, but the possibility of a wider war remains a real danger.
This has resulted in a violence where civilians on both sides have suffered. Clearly, the need for diplomacy and de-escalation has never been clearer.
