A 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck Istanbul, causing significant tremors throughout the city

A 6.2-magnitude tremor hit near Istanbul on Wednesday, leading residents to evacuate their buildings.

Istanbul authorities reported no immediate casualties or significant damage, but they are currently inspecting buildings and have advised residents to avoid potentially affected areas.

According to Turkish emergency authorities, the quake occurred at 12:49 local time and was recorded at a depth of 6.92 km.

A magnitude 6.2 earthquake was centered along the coast of the Sea of Marmara, specifically in the Silivri region, approximately 80 km west of Istanbul.

The Turkish authorities announced two seismic tremors of lower intensity, and aftershocks were also recorded.

In 2023, Southern Turkey experienced two devastating earthquakes that resulted in the loss of over 55,000 lives.

Istanbul, the most populous metropolis in Turkey, boasts a population of at least 16 million residents.
