President Zuma has also commended the outgoing president of Nigeria, His Excellency Goodluck Jonathan, for his leadership and commitment to consolidating democracy, peace and stability in Nigeria, the department of international relations and co-operation said.

He said Jonathan’s decision to concede defeat indicated his readiness and commitment to ensure a smooth transfer of power.

Like the rest of the international community, the government and the people of the Republic of South Africa will await the official announcement from the Independent National Electoral Commission of Nigeria regarding the final outcome of the elections.

Meanwhile, we congratulate the Nigerian people on a successful election and look toward working with the new government to enhance our existing strong historical ties, Zuma was quoted as saying.

Jonathan called the opposition candidate on Tuesday to congratulate him on winning elections at the weekend.

Buhuri, 72, is the first opposition candidate to win an election in Nigeria.
