Google Expands Access to Gemini Spark AI Agent

Google is widening access to Gemini Spark, its always-on AI agent that runs in the cloud and can keep working on tasks even when a user’s devices are off. The expansion moves Spark beyond trusted testers and into a broader rollout for U.S. Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, while also extending availability to select business users and more Gemini app surfaces.

What Google announced

Google describes Gemini Spark as a “24/7 personal AI agent” that helps users navigate digital life by carrying tasks forward in the background, even when a phone or laptop is turned off. In its latest support update, Google said Spark is rolling out in English to Google AI Pro subscribers in the United States, with additional availability expanding across Gemini-supported surfaces except in several restricted regions.

The company originally positioned Spark as a major step beyond a conventional chatbot, framing it as an active partner that can do real work under a user’s direction rather than simply answer questions. Google said Spark runs on Gemini 3.5 and uses the Antigravity harness, and that it is deeply integrated with Workspace tools such as Gmail, Docs, Slides and Calendar.

The broader rollout matters because it signals Google is no longer treating Spark as an experimental side project for a small tester pool. Instead, it is being pushed into the hands of paying consumers and business users as part of Google’s larger push into agentic AI.

How Spark works

Gemini Spark is designed around “tasks,” not just prompts, and can keep executing workflows in the background after the initial instruction is given. Google says the agent can create calendar events, draft, or send emails with approval, manage travel or shopping tasks through connected tools, and continue across devices as work progresses.

The system’s appeal is that it combines Google’s own productivity stack with third-party integrations. Spark can work with Gmail, Docs, and Calendar, but Google has also shown connections to apps and services such as Instacart, OpenTable, Canva, Dropbox, Keep and Tasks, broadening its usefulness beyond the Google ecosystem.

That background execution is what makes Spark different from a standard assistant. Instead of asking for a one-off answer, users can hand Spark a multi-step job, then let it work in the cloud while the user does something else. For workers buried in email, meetings, and scheduling, that is the core selling point.

Access and pricing

The initial rollout is being widened in stages. Google said Spark was first available to trusted testers, then expanded to U.S. Google AI Ultra subscribers over 18, and now is also rolling out to Google AI Pro subscribers in the U.S. in English.

Not every region is included. Google’s support page says Spark is rolling out everywhere Gemini Apps are supported except in Australia, Canada, the European Economic Area, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Nigeria, South Korea, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. That makes the current expansion broad by U.S. standards, but still tightly controlled internationally.

The pricing structure remains a hurdle for mainstream adoption. Wired and PCMag have both noted that Spark has been tied to Google’s higher-end AI Ultra tier, which initially targeted power users at roughly $99 a month in the U.S. Even as Spark reaches more users, it remains a premium product rather than a default consumer feature.

Why it matters for Google

Spark is Google’s clearest bet yet that the next stage of AI will be agents, not just chatbots. If Gemini was about answering questions, Spark is about doing things: triaging email, coordinating calendars, continuing tasks across devices and combining multiple apps into a single workflow.

That fits the market direction. AI competitors are also racing to make models more agentic, but Google has an advantage because it already owns the productivity suite many professionals use every day. The tighter Spark is bound to Gmail, Drive, Calendar and Docs, the more likely it is to become sticky inside both personal and enterprise workflows.

Google is also using Spark to reinforce the premium value of its AI subscriptions. By keeping the most capable automation tools behind higher tiers, the company can justify pricing while gathering feedback from users most likely to push the system hard.

Privacy and control concerns

The expansion also revives familiar questions about privacy and data access. Spark works best precisely because it can see enough of a user’s digital life to make useful decisions, including emails, documents, calendars, and connected services.

That level of access is powerful, but it also creates a wide permission surface. Google says users control what Spark can do and can approve actions before they are carried out, yet the agent’s always-on design means trust becomes part of the product’s core architecture.

For users, the trade-off is convenience versus comfort. Spark can save time by handling repetitive coordination work, but it can also feel intrusive if people are uneasy about a cloud agent that keeps working with broad access to messages and documents. That tension is likely to shape how fast Spark moves from early adopters to mainstream use.

What to watch next

The next phase will be whether Google opens Spark beyond the current U.S.-first rollout and whether it starts appearing in more Workspace plans. A broader rollout would give Google a large-scale test of whether consumers are ready to let an AI agent take on background work as a normal part of daily productivity.

The other key question is whether Spark can prove reliable enough for real-world use. Early hands-on reviews suggest it is among the most capable AI agents available, but also note that a powerful agent is only useful if users can trust it to act correctly and not overstep boundaries.

For now, Google is betting that more users will accept that trade-off if the time savings are real. The wider Spark rollout suggests the company believes agentic AI is ready to move from demo status to daily utility.
