Google Rebrands NotebookLM as Gemini Notebook

Google is folding one of its most experimental AI products more tightly into its flagship brand, rebranding NotebookLM as Gemini Notebook and giving each notebook its own “secure cloud computer” to run code and analyze data directly against a user’s sources. The move keeps the app as a standalone research tool but pulls it deeper into the Gemini app and Google Search, signaling that Google now sees personalized, source‑grounded notebooks as a core layer of its AI ecosystem rather than a side project.

From NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook

Google announced the rebrand in a mid‑July blog post, saying NotebookLM will now be known as Gemini Notebook, effective July 16. The company stressed that the product remains a standalone research companion focused on working with a user’s own sources, even as it “does more across the Google ecosystem,” including inside the Gemini app and Google Search.

The change aligns the tool’s name with the rest of Google’s AI portfolio, which has been consolidated under the Gemini banner since early 2024. Tech outlets noted that the old “NotebookLM” brand, where “LM” stood for language model, often felt like inside baseball for a consumer‑facing product, and that adopting the Gemini label may make marketing and positioning simpler.

Google says users will see the new name and logo roll out gradually across the web interface, Gemini app and Workspace environments over the coming weeks, with automatic redirects ensuring existing links and shared notebooks continue to work. Workspace admin guidance emphasizes there is no configuration change required; the update is largely cosmetic at the policy level but substantive in product capabilities.

What actually changes: secure cloud computers and code

Beyond branding, Google is adding a major new capability: every notebook now gets access to its own secure cloud computer. Practically, that means Gemini Notebook can write and execute code natively, running scripts against the documents, PDFs, transcripts, and data a user has loaded into a project.

Google says this upgrade lets the system perform complex data analysis grounded directly in a user’s sources, generating outputs such as charts, statistical summaries, structured tables, spreadsheets and even slide decks without leaving the notebook environment. Early coverage describes scenarios ranging from pivot‑table‑style breakdowns of research datasets to automated visualizations and draft reports that cite back to uploaded material.

The new compute layer is being rolled out in stages. At launch, it is available to Google AI Ultra subscribers and Workspace business customers with AI Ultra Access or AI Expanded Access, with Pro users on the web next in line over the coming weeks. Free users can continue to access Gemini Notebook at gemini.google.com, but advanced code execution and some output formats will initially be locked behind paid tiers.

Deeper ties to Gemini and Google Search

The rebrand dovetails with Google’s broader push to turn “notebooks” into a persistent project layer that follows users across its AI products. Notebooks already exist inside the Gemini app as project bases that organize chats, files and tasks, and those internal Gemini notebooks sync with the standalone Gemini Notebook experience.

Google now plans to surface those same notebooks inside AI Mode in Search, allowing users to pull up curated research folders and study guides without leaving a search session. That means a query in Search’s AI experience could potentially draw on both the open web and a user’s private notebook sources, with the latter providing context and citations customized to the individual.

On social channels, Google has framed the change as giving users “your premier research tool” everywhere they work, from the Gemini app to Search, rather than confining it to a standalone URL. Commentators note that this tighter coupling will likely make Gemini Notebook more visible to casual Google users who may never have tried NotebookLM when it sat on the periphery of the product lineup.

Strategy and concerns: unifying AI, raising questions

Industry analysts see the rebrand as part of a broader consolidation in Google’s AI strategy, which has seen the company retire overlapping names and bring experiments under the Gemini umbrella. NotebookLM itself has already lived through multiple identities, from Project Tailwind to NotebookLM and now Gemini Notebook, a rapid evolution some commentators argue reflects both the pace of AI development and ongoing uncertainty about how to package it for consumers and enterprises.

By tying Gemini Notebook more closely to Search, Google is also courting new scrutiny about how personal research data interacts with its advertising‑supported platforms, even as it stresses that notebooks are designed as private, source‑grounded workspaces. One tech analysis described Google as “quietly turning your uploaded PDFs and docs into a personalized layer on top of search,” while warning that many users may not fully grasp what they are opting into as integrations deepen.

Google’s own messaging emphasizes secure, isolated compute for each notebook and reiterates that the product is meant to keep research grounded in user‑supplied sources, not replace them with generic web summaries. For academics, journalists and knowledge workers who embraced NotebookLM for its source‑citation and long‑document capabilities, the main questions now center on whether the Gemini brand and new features will enhance that value or blur it inside a busier AI suite.
