Less sex, more scrolling: How smartphones may be driving down US birth rates

U.S. birth rates have been sliding for years, but a new generation of research is putting a surprising culprit at the center of the story: the smartphone. A working paper by economists at Middlebury College argues that the rollout of the iPhone and its imitators can explain roughly one‑third to one‑half of the drop in fertility among American women since 2007, by quietly altering how people spend time, meet partners, and use contraception.

A historic baby bust meets a new suspect

America’s fertility rate has been falling for decades, but the slide steepened after the mid‑2000s. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention now puts U.S. fertility at a record low, with about 53 births per 1,000 women aged 15–44 in 2025, down roughly 22–23% since 2007, the year the first iPhone went on sale.

Teen births have dropped even more dramatically. CDC data show births among 15‑ to 19‑year‑olds have fallen by more than two‑thirds since the early 1990s, with the decline accelerating in the smartphone era.

For years, experts have pointed to familiar explanations:

  • The Great Recession and its long hangover.
  • Rising housing, childcare and education costs.
  • Better access to birth control and abortion in many states over much of the period.
  • Changing norms about marriage, careers, and parenting.

Those forces clearly matter. But they haven’t fully accounted for how far and how fast fertility has fallen. Into that gap steps a new, and more provocative, candidate: the smartphone as a kind of social technology shock that alters the very conditions under which people meet, have sex and form families.

“Is the iPhone birth control?” The Middlebury natural experiment

The most talked‑about new research comes from economist Caitlin Myers of Middlebury College and her student co‑author Ezekiel Hooper. Their working paper, circulated via the National Bureau of Economic Research and widely covered in U.S. media, leans on a historical quirk: from 2007 to early 2011, the iPhone in America was sold exclusively through AT&T.

Because AT&T’s early 3G network was strong in some counties and weak in others, Myers and Hooper treat that patchy coverage as a kind of natural experiment. Counties with good AT&T service could adopt iPhones quickly; counties with poor coverage effectively had to wait, even as both sets of places were hit by the same recession and nationwide cultural shifts.

By comparing birth records from 2007–2011 across these areas, they find that fertility fell faster where smartphones spread fastest:

  • Among 15‑ to 19‑year‑olds, access to iPhones is linked to an additional 4.5–8% decline in births versus counties with minimal early access.
  • For 20‑ to 24‑year‑olds, the estimated effect is 3.2–6.6%.
  • Smaller but statistically significant drops appear in older groups, with births to women in their 30s barely rising, or even falling slightly, in high‑access counties while increasing elsewhere.

Roll those differences up, and the authors estimate that the early spread of the iPhone explains about 33% to 52% of the overall U.S. fertility decline from 2007 to 2011.

“What we are seeing is that the places that have the iPhone have big fertility changes relative to the other places,” Myers told CBS News. “Over this short period of time, it could explain about a third to a half of the decline. That leaves about half to two‑thirds unexplained.”

CNN’s write‑up notes that in counties where over 90% of residents had early smartphone access, teen births fell by about 26% between 2007 and 2011, compared with a 14% drop in counties where fewer than 10% had such access. For women in their twenties, the birth rate fell 15% in high‑access areas versus 10% in low‑access areas.

Because the variation in early coverage is driven by telecom infrastructure rather than local culture or family policy, Myers argues the pattern is strong evidence that smartphones are a cause, not just a correlate, of falling births.

How a phone in your pocket can lower fertility

The paper does not claim that smartphones magically prevent pregnancy. Instead, it proposes that they change daily life in ways that make conception — especially unplanned conception — less likely.

Among the mechanisms researchers highlight:

Less in‑person socializing, and sex

As modern smartphones spread after 2007, surveys show sharp declines in time spent hanging out in person, particularly among teens and young adults, and a drop in reported sexual activity. Myers and Hooper argue that phones have become a partial substitute for face‑to‑face interaction, shrinking the pool of casual encounters and relationships that once led to pregnancies.

More pornography as a substitute for partnered intimacy

With high‑speed internet in a pocket, access to pornography became effortless. The authors cite prior work suggesting that for some, increased porn use can displace partnered sex, reducing the likelihood of conception even without conscious efforts to avoid pregnancy.

Easier access to contraception and abortion information

Smartphones also make it far easier to search for birth‑control options, order contraception online and locate clinics, especially for younger people who may have lacked private, reliable information before. That can mean fewer unplanned births even if overall sexual activity doesn’t fall by much.

Attention captured by screens, not partners

Hooper suggests smartphones function as a “substitute” for seeking intimacy, noting that some young people may turn to online entertainment, social feeds, or erotic content instead of spending time with peers in ways that could lead to sex. “Rather than seeking that connection with someone else, they could be turning to online pornography,” he told CNN.

Anxieties that delay life plans

Although harder to quantify, sociologists point to “doomscrolling” through bad news, social‑media comparison and economic anxiety as ways always‑on phones may nudge people to delay marriage and parenthood, especially when raising children already looks financially daunting.

Taken together, the researchers argue, these channels “intensified the decline in births among younger women while hindering the increase in births among older women” who might otherwise have had more children in their thirties.

A wider pattern: a “global technology shock”

The Middlebury findings echo a separate study from the University of Cincinnati, which looked beyond the U.S. by combining World Bank data on smartphone penetration and teenage fertility in 128 countries.

That analysis found that as smartphones spread globally after 2007, teen birth rates fell faster in country after country, regardless of whether they had generous welfare states, restrictive abortion laws or very different cultural attitudes toward family. The authors describe this as evidence of a “common global technology shock”: once people carry internet‑connected screens everywhere, the effects on social life and fertility show a similar pattern across wildly different societies.

Major Asian economies, including South Korea and Japan, which already struggled with ageing populations, are now bracing for even steeper declines as smartphones and other digital technologies become all but universal.

Not the whole story: economists urge caution

Even those most closely involved in the new research are careful not to overstate their case.

“We’re not saying it’s all the iPhone,” Myers stressed in interviews with CBS News and People magazine. “It is a really important factor to consider. Within this brief timeframe, it could clarify about one‑third to half of the decrease, leaving a significant portion still unexplained.”

Other demographers note that U.S. teenage birth rates have been falling since the 1950s, long before smartphones existed, and that fertility has dropped in many rich countries that rolled out high‑speed mobile networks on different timelines.

They argue that economic and policy factors remain central:

  • The lingering effects of the Great Recession and COVID‑19 on job and income stability.
  • High housing and childcare costs, especially in coastal metros where fertility has fallen furthest.
  • Shifts in women’s education and employment, with more women pursuing advanced degrees and careers before considering children.

In that view, smartphones are less a root cause than an accelerant, amplifying underlying trends toward later, more deliberate childbearing and fewer large families.

Still, the new papers have moved the debate. “Researchers are pointing to smartphones as a potentially significant factor for declining birth rates,” ABC News told viewers, summarizing one report’s claim that phones alone could account for more than 30% of the fertility decline among women aged 15–44.

Policy questions: adapt to fewer babies, or rethink digital life?

The idea that a pocket‑sized device might reshape a country’s demographic destiny poses tricky questions for policymakers.

No serious researcher is calling for banning smartphones to boost births. Phones are now integral to work, education, safety, and social life. Instead, the studies underline two broad imperatives.

First, governments may need to adjust expectations about population and labor supply, recognizing that fertility may stay low even if economic conditions improve, in part because technology has made it easier to avoid unplanned pregnancies and to build fulfilling lives without children. That could mean planning for older workforces, rethinking pension systems and making immigration policy more central to growth strategies.

Second, if smartphones are crowding out in‑person connection, there is an argument for investing in offline spaces and support that make partnering and parenting more attractive: affordable childcare, housing, parental leave, and community infrastructure that counterbalances the pull of the screen.

For now, the new research leaves the U.S. with a paradox. Smartphones have delivered an explosion of connection, entertainment, and information — and, according to these economists, they may also be quietly reducing the chances that the next generation is born at all.
