The 28 year-old is currently serving in Afghanistan and found out that his brother and wife were expecting a baby via email on Monday afternoon after the Duchess was rushed to hospital with severe morning sickness.

The 30 year-old, who is thought to be eight weeks pregnant, will stay there for the next few days, but according to St James’ Palace is “doing better”.

A spokesperson said: “The Duchess of Cambridge is continuing to feel better. She and the Duke are immensely grateful for the good wishes they have received. She will remain in hospital at present.”

According to The Mirror Harry, who is known to be close to the Duchess, was over-joyed when he heard the news of the royal baby.

A source told the newspaper: “Harry jumped for joy when he heard the news that Kate is expecting. He’s really looking forward to coming back and can’t wait to be an uncle.”

While Harry and most of the world, have been elated at the prospect of a royal bundle of joy, Kate’s serious condition could mean she has tough weeks ahead, with some experts saying that the hyperemesis gravidarum that she is suffering could last for her entire pregnancy.

GP Dr Roger Gadsby told The Mirror said: “It can lead to women being sick 10 to 20 times a day but it is not just the sickness that is distressing, it is the constant feeling of nausea.”

“For the majority of women hyperemesis gravidarum stops around the 12 to 16 week mark.”

He added: “Some women carry on suffering until 20 to 24 weeks and a few are sick for most of the pregnancy.”

With Kate receiving medical treatment in London at the King Edwards VII hospital it is unknown what will happen with Prince William’s work commitments as an RAF Search and Rescue pilot, if she requires close care for her full term of pregnancy.

It may see the royal couple separated, or the Prince leave his career behind and make a permanent move to London.
