‘I Believe In Equality’: Beyonce Praises Herself As A Modern-Day Feminist

The singer says she loves being an empowered woman and feels more fearless than ever

She sang about girls running the world, telling their men that they should have put a ring on it and how us ladies can all be fiercely independent from men – so it’s no surprise that Beyoncé classes herself as a modern day feminist.

However, the ‘Bow Down’ singer said she although she believes in equality for women and breaking the glass ceiling, she thinks that there is still a long way to go until women are completely equal to their male counterparts.

Despite her staunch stance on being an independent woman, she also admitted that she loves being a wife to husband Jay-Z and a mother to their year-old daughter Blue Ivy.

The singer, whose Mrs Carter world tour starts in Serbia on April 15th, said she actually considers the word ‘feminist’ as very extreme.

Explaining her reasoning to British Vogue, she said: “I guess I am a modern-day feminist. I do believe in equality. Why do you have to choose what type of woman you are? Why do you have to label yourself anything? I’m just a woman and I love being a woman.”

And she said that women should continue to fight for total equality but she also feels that the battle has been “pushed aside and something that we have been conditioned to accept”.

Beyoncé married rapper Jay-Z in 2008 and they welcomed their daughter Blue Ivy to the world in January 2012, and despite her modern-day woman beliefs, she said she loves being a mother and wife.

“I’m happily married. I love my husband. I feel like Mrs Carter is who I am, but more bold and more fearless than I’ve ever been.

“It comes from knowing my purpose and really meeting myself once I saw my child. I was like, ‘OK, this is what you were born to do’. The purpose of my body became completely different.”

She no doubt wants to instill some feminine values into her little girl and has said if Blue Ivy decides to follow her parents into showbiz, she will fully support her.

“I definitely want my daughter to have goals and drive and passion – it has to be a balance.”
