President Donald Trump sent National Guard troops to Los Angeles following widespread protests which were sparked by federal immigration enforcement actions.
The immediate trigger was a series of raids conducted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which sparked mass demonstrations, engagements between protesters and law enforcement, and some instances of violence including protesters throwing rocks at law enforcement vehicles.
Trump justified the deployment of about 2000 California National Guard troops by claiming it was needed to “contain lawlessness” and restore order to the city, asserting that local officials, including California Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass could or would not contain the chaos.
Trump reported on his social media website that if the state and local leaders “can’t do the job” then the federal government would have to “do the job the right way”.
This action was significant because it was undertaken despite the strong objection of Governor Newsom, who would typically exercise control over the California National Guard.
Newsom and other local officials condemned the deployment as “deliberately inflammatory,” claiming it would escalate conflict rather than defuse it.
