Helen Mirren to Receive the Golden Globes’ Cecil B. DeMille Award

The Golden Globe’s Cecil D. DeMille Award, named for the iconic filmmaker, is among the highest awards given by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association to recognize contributions to the world of entertainment; as well, they recognize excellence of craft, longevity, and impact. In fact, Mirren’s selection brings her into the company of the highest awardees from the past, including Sidney Poitier, Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks, and Viola Davis.

The awards presentation will occur on January 8, 2026, as part of the new “Golden Eve” primetime special airing on CBS and streaming on Paramount+, which will now feature awards and benefits for television. The “Golden Eve” presentation will also recognize television achievements with the Carol Burnett Award, although who the second recipient will has not yet been released.

A Career of More than 60 Years

Helen Mirren’s career spans over 60 years and has truly been one of the most remarkable careers of iconic performing in film, theater, and television. She first gained high acclaim, and later, significant notoriety, portrayed Queen Elizabeth II in “The Queen” (2006), which later earned her an Academy Award for Best Actress at the 2017 Academy Awards. Helen Mirren has received 4 Oscar nominations and has won multiple awards including 3 Golden Globe Awards, Emmy Awards, and a Tony Award.

Her films also mark a truly varied career spanning from historical epics “Caligula,” “Excalibur,” and “Elizabeth I,” to modern favorites like “The Cook, the Thief, His Wife, & Her Lover” and narration in “Barbie.” On television, Mirren offered her talent and acclaimed acting character as Jane Tennison in the “Prime Suspect” mini-series that effectively redefined female detective character arcs, and currently can be seen starring in “1923,” a “Yellowstone Universe” mini-series.

Helen Mirren has been recognized for her earning distinction as a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in 2003 for her contributions to drama. She has left behind a tremendous legacy and makes an influence on a generation across cultures and inspiring a generation of existing actors and potential actors alike.

Industry and Peer Reactions

Golden Globes President, Helen Hoehne, was “blown away. Simply put, Mirren is a “force of nature”, lauding her incredible performances and dedication to her craft. Industry members reaffirmed Hoehne’s remarks, as they expressed their admiration for Mirren’s fearlessness about eccentric and complex characters, bringing a range of depth and dignity in all that she portrays.

Mirren’s award is viewed by many to not only commemorate Mirren’s past triumphs and accolades, but to acknowledge Mirren’s continued relevance and roles that align with her talents, especially as she enters her 80s.

The 2026 Golden Globes and the “Golden Eve” Special

This year will mark the start of Golden Globes “Golden Eve”, a primetime awards special created to amplify the visibility and prestige of the honorary awards that take place annually at the Golden Globes awards. Golden Eve will air on January 8th, 2026, before the Golden Globes are held on January 11, and will see Nikki Glaser hosting the Golden Globes for the second time.

Mirren’s honors will serve to anchor the Golden Eve special, and the special will feature honors and tributes, with techniques used in dramatic storytelling to highlight the destinations of her career, to demonstrate her achievements and contributions to film and television. The special will dedicate an hour to demonstrate the range of recognition from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. The goal is to showcase the extensive pool of talent while also honoring heartfelt contributions to the medium, and we hope to do so with Mirren’s Honor as an anchor.
