Key Facts
- Apple said on Monday, Oct. 5, that developers can now submit apps and games built for iPhone Duo through App Store Connect.
- iPhone Duo, Apple’s first foldable iPhone, goes on sale Oct. 23. Preorders open Oct. 16, and the starting price is $1,999 in the U.S.
- Developers build or recompile with Xcode 27.1. Apple released the Xcode 27.1 Release Candidate the same day it opened submissions.
- Every existing app will run on iPhone Duo. How much of the screen an app uses depends on which iOS SDK it was built with.
- Starting in April 2027, all apps and games submitted to the App Store must include iPhone Duo screenshots.
- Also starting in April 2027, iOS uploads must be built with the iOS 27 SDK or later.
Apple is now accepting App Store submissions for apps and games built for iPhone Duo. The change gives developers just under three weeks to ship updates before the company’s first foldable iPhone reaches customers on Oct. 23. In an Oct. 5 developer notice, Apple told developers to recompile their apps with Xcode 27.1, test them in Xcode’s Device Hub across “all poses and orientations,” and submit them in App Store Connect.

The phone has a 5.4-inch outer display and a 7.6-inch inner display that folds. Apple says both screens share the same aspect ratio. iPhone Duo will ship with iOS 27.1.
What Happened
Apple’s notice lists four steps for developers:
- Recompile with Xcode 27.1, which adds iPhone Duo support.
- Check app behavior in Device Hub.
- Use a new preview tool in App Store Connect to see how screenshots, product page headers and other metadata will look on an iPhone Duo product page.
- Register for iPhone Duo workshops.
Apple had been releasing Xcode 27.1 betas for several weeks. It released Release Candidate 1 on Oct. 5, according to 9to5Mac. A release candidate is normally the last build before the final version. Apple’s iPhone Duo developer hub now lists the “Xcode 27.1 Release Candidate” as the toolset for building and testing apps.
Before this week, the window was narrow. Developer Blake Crosley wrote on Oct. 2 that, as of early October, App Store Connect accepted builds made with the 27.1 betas only for TestFlight beta testing, not for public release.
How It Works for Developers
Three display modes, depending on the SDK
Apple says every app will run on iPhone Duo. The SDK an app was built with decides how it looks:
- iOS 26 SDK or earlier: On the open device, the app sits in the center of the inner display with empty space around it. On the outer display, it appears to the left of the status bar and camera.
- iOS 27 SDK: The app resizes to fill most of the inner display but leaves room for the status bar on the right edge.
- iOS 27.1 SDK or later: The app counts as optimized for iPhone Duo and fills the whole display. Toolbars and tab bars move to a vertical position below the status bar.
MacRumors described apps that are not optimized as appearing with “black borders.” Apple’s own guidance says “empty space” around the app window.
Apple also gave a warning about the move to vertical bars. Before shipping a build made with the iOS 27.1 SDK, developers should confirm that their content still works when toolbars and tab bars become vertical.
Code changes Apple recommends
Apple’s preparation guide targets common habits that assume a fixed iPhone screen:
- Replace calls to UIScreen.main with view or window bounds.
- Re-read the available size whenever it changes, because folding the phone can resize an app while it is open.
- Remove checks for specific device dimensions.
- Stop basing layouts on device orientation or on whether the device is an iPhone or iPad.
Apple adds that on iPhone Duo, an iPhone app can have any combination of size classes. That means a regular-width layout no longer reliably means “iPad.”
Folds and camera areas
Apple’s technical documentation adds new layout tools:
- Reserved regions: iOS marks the folding area and hardware such as cameras as “reserved regions.” Developers can read these through SwiftUI’s GeometryReader or through UIKit.
- Fold behavior: The fold region is active when the phone is partly open and inactive when it is fully flat.
- Arrangement views: A new container, ArrangementView in SwiftUI and UIArrangementViewController in UIKit, arranges two views either side by side (“split”) or one over the other (“overlay”). It adjusts automatically around the fold.
Testing tools
Apple calls the iPhone Duo simulator in Xcode 27.1 the best way to test the full experience. Developers can also use a resizable iOS simulator in Device Hub, or iPhone Mirroring on macOS 27 with the window stretched to extreme sizes. Xcode’s coding assistant includes a “resizability” skill. Developers can ask it to “get my app ready for iPhone Duo,” and it will scan the project and suggest fixes. Apple says the tool finds most, but not all, issues.
What Apple and Others Are Saying
When Apple introduced the device on Sept. 9, CEO John Ternus called it “the most transformational change to iPhone since the original.” He said it “redefines what it means to use a foldable phone.” Apple said Netflix, Zoom and Slack were already adapting their apps to the folding design.
Some developers are building features around the hinge itself. Axios reported that a San Francisco hackathon produced 73 iPhone Duo projects. One was Duo-Man, a music player by indie developer Vidit Bhargava that works like a Sony Walkman. “This thing opens exactly like the iPhone Duo,” Bhargava told Axios, describing how the idea came to him.
What Remains Unclear
Reports differ on the App Store badge. 9to5Mac quoted Apple as saying that apps built with Xcode 27.1 will show a badge on their product page marking them as optimized for iPhone Duo. The Japanese developer site Apple Hacks said that sentence did not appear in Apple’s notice when it checked on Oct. 6. The current text of Apple’s notice, as reviewed for this report, does not mention a badge. Whether the badge exists may not be clear until launch.
Other open questions:
- iOS 27.1 release date: Apple has not announced when iOS 27.1 will be released to the public. It has said only that iPhone Duo will ship with it.
- Final Xcode 27.1: Apple has not announced a date for the final version.
- Hinge-angle API: One trade report described an API that reports the hinge angle. That claim is not in Apple’s published documentation reviewed here and could not be independently verified.
Why It Matters
A new device with a new screen shape is only as useful as the apps that support it. Apple’s large inner display invites comparison with the iPad. Apple’s guidance says an app on the inner display should look like “a natural extension” of its iPad layout.
The April 2027 rules affect every iOS developer, including those who never plan to optimize for a foldable. From that month, uploads must use the iOS 27 SDK or later and target iOS 15 or later. They must also include iPhone Duo screenshots. Apple does not require a full 27.1 optimization. But under Apple’s three display modes, any app updated after that date would at least move out of the narrow, centered iOS 26 layout.
Background
Apple unveiled iPhone Duo on Sept. 9 alongside its iPhone 18 Pro models. The phone uses the A20 Pro chip and comes with 256GB to 2TB of storage. Preorders open in more than 70 countries and regions. Availability expands to 28 more countries and regions on Oct. 30. The release date was first set in September, and Apple released the first developer resources for the device the same day.
