Diplomatic sources have it that on Wednesday, Shafiq fled barely hours after an investigation was launched into claims he wasted public funds while a senior minister.

Shafiq, who was former President Hosni Mubarak’s last Prime Minister, chose Abu Dhabi; where many old regime members are currently in exile.

He lost to Mohammed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood when results were declared on Sunday.

The next day, 24 lawsuits alleging corruption were officially filed against him. He denied the claims.

His spokesman insists “he will return”!
