Trump’s Golden Dome Plan: Ambition, Controversy, and the Future of U.S. Missile Defense

Notice: This article was last updated 1 year ago.

President Donald Trump has unveiled a huge and contentious plan to build a “Golden Dome” missile defense system. The multibillion-dollar system is intended to protect the United States from missile attacks from other countries, even space-based missiles.

The Golden Dome was revealed in May 2025 and is the biggest U.S. missile defense system in decades. It will cost $175 billion and become operational before Trump’s 2029 term ends.

What is the Golden Dome?

The Golden Dome is designed as a layered defense shield for missiles inspired from Israel’s Iron Dome but significantly larger and more technologically advanced.

Donald Trump’s vision is to protect the entire continental United States, 450 times larger than the Iron Dome, from a wide variety of threats, including ballistic, hypersonic, and cruise missiles of advanced nature.

Unlike to the Iron Dome who protects a small country from short-range attack.

Some facts about the Golden Dome are:

 • Space-Based Interceptors and Sensors: Never before in U.S. history would the system put missile interceptors and sensors into space to defeat threats at all stages, from pre-launch to terminal descent.

 • Next-Generation Technologies: The architecture utilizes ground, sea, and space assets. It utilizes advanced sensors and artificial intelligence to target and destroy incoming missiles.

Multiple Layers of Defense: The system is designed to destroy missiles before launch, intercept them early in flight, intercept them midway through their flight, and intercept them just before they impact their target.

 Cost, Schedule, and Supervision

Trump detailed that the project will cost $175 billion, with the first $25 billion cut from the defense budget and additional amount secured through tax reductions and expenditure cuts. U.S. Space Force General Michael Guetlein will lead the project. He will work alongside defense contractors and tech firms, including SpaceX, which is already bidding for contracts.

Trump asserts it will be “operational before the end of my term,” but defense professionals have doubts. Experts say even a mini-version would take 7 to 10 years to establish and would only safeguard major government buildings and big cities, not the whole nation.

The Pentagon gave Trump some choices, which they called “medium,” “high,” and “extra high.” The president reportedly chose the “high” option, which has a lot of space-based infrastructure.

Reactions throughout the globe and in politics

People all over the globe and in U.S. have been critical and worried about the Golden Dome concept.

China has said that the project may lead to more weapons in space and start a new international arms race.

There are still disagreements in Congress over if it can be done, how much it will cost, and if there will be any conflict of interest, especially because there are private companies like SpaceX who would prefer to get involved.

Canada has expressed a desire to be included in the initiative. Negotiations are ongoing regarding how to incorporate the Golden Dome into the broader framework of the NORAD relationship and improve cooperation on continent defense.

The Golden Dome is visionary as an idea for American missile defense, but it poses gigantic technological, fiscal, and political problems.

The project will depend on finding Congressional support, creating new technological advances, and being able to navigate difficult geopolitical dynamics.

The Golden Dome will be in the center of discussions relating to security, technology, and space militarization as U.S. moves forward.
