Nearly 20 members of the woman’s family, including her father and brothers, attacked her and her husband with batons and bricks in broad daylight before a crowd of onlookers in front of the high court of Lahore, police investigator Rana Mujahid said. Police official Zulfiqar Hameed said Thursday that the man, Mohammed Iqbal, was arrested after the 2009 killing but a family member later forgave him. That’s allowed under Pakistani law. Iqbal did not respond to repeated requests for comment from The Associated Press.

Two of Iqbal’s cousins said he had been forgiven by one of his sons for the killing.

Iqbal’s second wife was bludgeoned to death Tuesday in the eastern city of Lahore by family members. Iqbal and his second wife’s lawyer said the family was angry because they wanted her to marry someone else.
