Michelle Wie had a lot of people talking on the LPGA Tour this weekend. Unfortunately, it wasn’t about her stellar play. The LPGA golfer shot a 66 on Thursday and had many golf fans wondering if she would win her first U.S. Women’s Open Championship. By the end of the weekend, however, all golf fans could say was, ‘Wow, Michelle Wie looked great in that purple dress.”
After her 66 Wie went on to shoot a 78 and an 80 and dropped to 35th on the leaderboard, 17 strokes behind the U.S. Women’s Open Champion, Na Yeon Choi.
But the weekend wasn’t a total loss for Wie.
The LPGA golfer saw a lot of success early on her career (she made her LPGA debut at age 12) but she hasn’t seen much success recently. Her round of 66 reminded Wie that she has what it takes to compete at the professional level.
“It was one of the most frustrating rounds for me… There are some things I need to work on, but at the same time this week was a definite confidence-booster for me… Being up there in contention kind of got my juices flowing and kind of made me want it more. I felt what it was like again.”
According to Golf Digest, Wie’s T-35 was a pretty good result considering her history the last few years. In 2006, Wie scored her best result at the U.S. Women’s Open by finishing T-3 at the age of 16. Since then, however, she’s missed the cut twice, did not qualify one year, had a withdrawal, and finished T-55 last year.
But hey, Michelle Wie looks fantastic in a purple dress.
After shooting a 66, Wie said:
“I don’t know if anyone gave up on me or not. I’m sure some did and some didn’t. But I never gave up on myself, and today was a good reminder to myself what I can do and I still have it.”
Do you think Michelle Wie will ever win the U.S. Women’s Open Championship? The LPGA star is only 22-years-old so she’ll have a few more attempts over the course of her career.
