Rwanda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Olivier Nduhungirehe, said late yesterday (Sunday) on public television that Rwanda is in talks to take in immigrants deported from the United States.
In recent years, Kagame’s country has positioned itself as a destination for migrants whom Western countries would like to expel.
In 2022, Rwanda signed an agreement with Great Britain to take in thousands of British asylum seekers, which was eventually cancelled by Prime Minister Keir Starmer on his arrival in office.
In his statement, the Rwandan Foreign Minister also made clear the embryonic nature of the discussions. “We haven’t yet reached a stage where we can say exactly how things are going to work, but discussions are underway”.
The United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) has warned Rwanda that some migrants sent to the country may be returned to the countries from which they fled.
It should be noted that as soon as he took office in January 2025, President Trump launched a vast immigration crackdown, attempting to freeze the U.S. refugee resettlement program.
