Mia Love, former Utah rep. and first black congresswoman dies at 49

Former U.S. Rep. Mia Love of Utah, the first US black Republican congresswoman, daughter of Haitian immigrants, died Sunday. She was 49.

The news of her death has been posted on Love’s X account by her family.

according to a statement posted by the family, Love died at her home in Saratoga Springs, Utah.

Her daughter Abigale said earlier this month that Love had no longer been responding to treatment for brain cancer.

Mia Love entered politics in 2003 2003 when she won a seat on the Saratoga Springs’ city council, and she later became the mayor, aged 34.

She was elected to the US House of Representatives in 2024 and made history as the first Black Republican woman to take up the role, and served two terms.

In 2022, Love was diagnosed with glioblastoma, a fast-moving and aggressive form of brain cancer.
