The decision is aimed at burying a program launched by Joe Biden for migrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela. They will lose their legal protection thirty days after the new order is published on Tuesday.

To be more precise, some 532,000 Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans and Venezuelans who arrived in the United States under a program launched by Joe Biden will be affected by the decision.

Migrants sponsored by this program, dubbed CHNV (“Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, Venezuela Parole Program”), will have to “leave the United States” by April 24, unless they have obtained another immigration status allowing them to remain in the country, the Department of Homeland Security said in a memo.

This special program, announced in January 2023 by Joe Biden’s administration, allowed entry to the US for two years for up to 30,000 migrants per month due to the human rights situation in these four countries.

On Friday, the decision immediately sparked outrage and concern among migrant advocates. The Welcome.US organization, which supports people seeking refuge in the United States, urged migrants affected by the measure to consult an immigration lawyer immediately.

Since his return to power, Donald Trump has been staging the vast offensive against immigration promised during his campaign.
