Tyrann Mathieu, ‘The Honey Badger,’ has retired after 12 NFL seasons, end a very interesting chapter in contemporary football and leaving behind a legacy of determination, leadership, and tremendous playmaking.

The veteran safety, who quarterbacked feared him and fans loved, official announced his retirement on July 22, 2025, with the New Orleans Saints just starting training camp the next day. This announcement surprised many people across the league.

According to CBS Sports and ESPN, the 33-year-old retires from the NFL after an impressive career that has taken place across four franchises and stamped his name down as one of the most versatile, instinctual defensive backs in his generation.

It all started for Mathieu in New Orleans, his home. The legend of “The Honey Badger” started, however, when he entered into LSU. He earned the nickname during his time at LSU thanks to his tenacity and unique ability to cause turnovers. While he certainly faced challenges during his career, including being dismissed from LSU in a very public fashion, Mathieu rebooted and was selected by the Arizona Cardinals in the 3rd round of the 2013 NFL draft.

  • Houston Texans: After five years and a sizeable contract in Arizona, Mathieu signed a one-year deal with the Texans in 2018 as they continued to build their defense, showcasing his versatility and comfort playing different secondary positions.
  • Kansas City Chiefs: Perhaps the most decorated chapter of Mathieu’s career happened with the Kansas City Chiefs (2019-2021). Mathieu was the heart of the defense and played an incredibly important role in the Chiefs Super Bowl LIV run in 2019. He made two more first-team All-Pro teams and established himself as an elite player in the NFL.
  • New Orleans Saints: In his hometown playing for the Saints to finish his career, Mathieu started all 51 games in three seasons as a Saint, providing not only elite performance but also critical leadership to a young secondary.
