OpenAI is reportedly preparing to enter the consumer-hardware business with a portable, screenless artificial-intelligence speaker expected to cost more than $300, a premium device designed to make ChatGPT a constant voice-driven presence in the home.
The product, which OpenAI has not publicly announced, is expected to resemble a doughnut-shaped smart speaker roughly the size of a hockey puck. It would be battery-powered, portable enough to carry around a home with one hand and built from high-quality metal rather than the plastic materials common in lower-priced smart speakers.
People familiar with the project told Bloomberg that OpenAI is discussing a retail price between $300 and $400 and is targeting a launch in 2027. That price would place the device far above many mainstream smart speakers from Amazon and Google and suggests OpenAI is positioning its first hardware product as a premium AI companion rather than a basic voice-controlled music player.
The company has not confirmed the reports, its intended price, its launch date, or its eventual feature set. But the emerging details offer the clearest view yet of OpenAI’s plans to move beyond apps, subscriptions, and APIs into physical consumer products.
A smart speaker, but not a conventional one
OpenAI’s proposed product is being described as “essentially a smart speaker without a display,” but the phrase can be misleading. The device reportedly would do more than play music, set timers or answer simple questions.
According to Bloomberg reporting summarized by The Verge and TechCrunch, the speaker would run a more advanced version of ChatGPT’s voice technology, allowing for longer, more natural, and context-aware conversations. The product could answer questions, play media, respond to messages, help control smart-home devices and perform functions currently handled through ChatGPT’s mobile app.
The reported ambition is to create a device that behaves less like a traditional smart speaker and more like an AI-powered household companion. Rather than requiring users to issue tightly structured commands, “set a timer,” “play this playlist,” or “turn off the lights”, the product is expected to interpret more conversational requests and follow ongoing exchanges.
That concept echoes the central promise of generative AI: replacing menu-driven software with systems that respond to ordinary language. OpenAI’s bet appears to be that voice, not another screen, may be the most natural way to bring that model into homes.
Design shaped by Jony Ive’s influence
The device is reportedly being developed in partnership with LoveFrom, the design firm founded by former Apple design chief Jony Ive.
Ive is known for leading the industrial-design work behind products including the iMac, iPod, iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch. His involvement immediately raises expectations that OpenAI’s hardware will seek to distinguish itself through materials, physical interaction, and emotional appeal, rather than solely through software features.
Sources cited by Bloomberg said the speaker will have a “premium look,” use high-quality metal and include moving mechanical parts intended to give it personality. Those elements may move independently when the device responds or interacts with a user, creating a visible sense that the product is listening, processing, or speaking.
The device may also include lights that signal when microphones are active or when the system is responding. Such indicators would be essential for a product expected to rely on always-available voice interaction and environmental awareness.
The physical design is said to be ring-shaped or doughnut-shaped, rather than cylindrical like an Amazon Echo or puck-like in the style of older Google Home Mini devices. Bloomberg’s sources said the design would make it easier to pick up with one hand and move between a kitchen counter, bedside table, desk or living room.
Cameras, microphones, and sensors
One of the most consequential aspects of the reported device is not its shape or price. It is the possibility that it will include a camera system, microphones and sensors designed to understand a user’s surroundings.
The speaker reportedly would use those inputs to gain context about what is happening around it. For example, instead of merely responding to a spoken request, an AI assistant could potentially identify objects placed nearby, recognize when a user is cooking, notice an item on a desk or adjust responses based on a room’s activity.
That capability would represent a major step beyond the current generation of voice assistants. Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant are primarily driven by voice commands, connected services and device-control routines. A speaker that can combine visual, audio, and environmental data could become significantly more proactive, but also more invasive.
Bloomberg’s earlier reporting said OpenAI envisions a device that becomes increasingly personalized as it learns about its owner, potentially using information such as emails and messages to anticipate needs and offer context-sensitive help.
OpenAI has not publicly explained what privacy safeguards might govern such a device. The unanswered questions are significant:
- Would the camera be continuously active, or only operate after a user command?
- Could users physically disable the camera and microphones?
- Would audio and visual data be processed locally, in the cloud or both?
- How long would information be retained?
- Would other people in a household receive notice that the system is collecting environmental data?
- Could users prevent the device from accessing email, messages, or calendars?
For a company whose products already rely heavily on cloud-based AI systems, the privacy model could become as important as the device’s design.
Why the price matters
The reported $300-to-$400 price point is striking because it would place the product well above the typical consumer smart-speaker market. Amazon’s Echo line, Google’s Nest speakers and Apple’s HomePod Mini have historically competed at far lower price points, often below $100.
OpenAI may be betting that consumers will pay more for a device that offers something categorically different: a powerful, conversational AI system with a personality, deep personalization, and broader task capabilities.
That strategy would resemble Apple’s approach to the smartphone market, charging more for a tightly integrated hardware-and-software experience, rather than Amazon’s approach of using low-cost speakers to expand an ecosystem of shopping, subscriptions, and smart-home services.
Still, the price creates risk. The AI hardware sector has already produced high-profile disappointments, including products that promised hands-free, AI-first computing but failed to deliver practical everyday value. Consumers may be skeptical of paying several hundred dollars for a screenless gadget if their phone already offers ChatGPT voice conversations, cameras, messaging, and access to personal data.
OpenAI’s challenge will be to show that its device does something meaningfully better than a smartphone with the ChatGPT app.
A 2027 launch, if the plan holds
The speaker is reportedly scheduled for release in 2027, although that timeline remains subject to change.
OpenAI is said to be developing a broader hardware lineup of roughly five devices, with the smart speaker expected to be the first major product released. Other reported concepts have included AI glasses and a smart lamp, although those plans remain unconfirmed and could change as development continues.
The timing is important. By 2027, the AI-assistant market may look very different. Apple is working to improve Siri, Amazon is expanding generative-AI features in Alexa, Google is integrating Gemini into Android and its smart-home ecosystem, and Meta is pushing AI into glasses and social platforms.
OpenAI enters this competition with perhaps the strongest consumer AI brand name, but without an established hardware business, supply chain, retail network or device-support operation.
