Victoria Mboko Wins First WTA Tour Title: Canadian Starlet Shocks Tennis World in Montreal

It was an electrifying week of tennis for Canada and Victoria Mboko capped it off by winning her first WTA Tour title at the National Bank Open in Montreal. Mboko’s fairytale run sent shockwaves through the tennis community after defeating four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka in front of a boisterous home crowd at only 18 years old with grit, athleticism, and jaw-dropping shot-making.

The Breakthrough: Mboko’s Historic Triumph

Wildcard entry Victoria Mboko, who trailed for the majority of the match, shocked the crowd and experts and won the final 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 against Osaka. The excitement marks Mboko’s first WTA title, and she is now part of a rare group—she joined Faye Urban (1969) and Bianca Andreescu (2019) as the only Canadians to win their home country tournament in the Open Era. The accomplishment is astonishing given her background. Mboko began 2025 ranked outside of the top 300 and had a ranking of No. 85 just prior to the tournament.

The crowd in Montreal was as loud as possible, with the umpire asking for quiet on several occasions during the match. After her victory, Mboko dropped to her knees and was overwhelmed with emotion before sprinting to hug her family and coaches.

Fighting the odds: Wrist injury and an elite field

Mboko’s “dream run” was far from without difficulty. She battled through a wrist injury scare, which made her performance and resilience more impressive. During the week, Mboko defeated four Grand Slam champions—Sofia Kenin, Coco Gauff, Elena Rybakina, and Naomi Osaka—demonstrating mental toughness and tactical maturity that is rare for a teenager.

Her run included wins over Gauff and Rybakina, seeded No. 1 and No. 3, making Mboko the second youngest player in the Open Era to defeat four Grand Slam champions at one tournament since Serena Williams’s memorable achievement in 1999.

Emotional Reflections and Significance

“I was so excited to compete in Montreal for the first time. I remember being a little nervous, but I just tried to enjoy it,” Mboko recalled after her victory. “After I won my first match, I was extremely happy and content. I never thought I would make it to the final, let alone win the entire tournament. There are so many emotions pumped up; I can’t even describe it.”

On seeing her family and supporters cheer her on made it “kind of a surreal experience,” Mboko said. “It just shows that your dreams are closer than they [may] appear.”

Rankings and Records

Mboko’s win catapults her into the WTA Top 25 from No. 333 to start the season. And the two weeks in Montreal will go down in history for both her performance under pressure and as one of the most audacious breakouts in Canadian sports history.

She also finished the week having won seven matches just in Montreal, adding to her season total of recording 50+ match wins this season—an achievement in itself that few of her peers can say they have accomplished at that age.

Legacy: Canada’s Next Tennis Star?

While Canadian tennis is not new to the international stage, build on by the recent success of Andreescu, Auger-Aliassime and Shapovalov, Canadian audiences, and even the world, feel a new sense of pride as Mboko emerges as the newest sports hero from Canada and the inspiration for an upcoming generation of Canadian tennis players. Mboko’s demeanor, humility and effort during the tournament have already earned her accolades from pundits and basketball fans with plenty saying she has a serious shot at a Grand Slam.

Having now won the Canadian Open, Mboko’s now set for scrutiny in future Grand Slam events and with international tournaments. If she maintains her current form, she may very well be a staple at the top of the women’s game for a long time to come.

Victoria Mboko wins her first WTA Tour title– not simply with skill and grit but with the heart of a champion in front of a nation that now stands firmly behind her. Tennis fans should be excited for what is to come from this emerging star as she begins what will likely be a special career.
