Skate parks in the United States have been popping up for young skaters since the mid-60s. However, in recent years, they have been growing more rapidly. Boston too has its fair share of skate parks and plans are on the horizon for more to come. Similar to other cities, Boston has skate parks spread out in various areas of the metro. There are parks designed for all different levels of skating enthusiasts.
Skaters Edge: Depending on whether you want to skate inside or outside, you may or may not like this one. Skaters Edge is an indoor park located in Taunton, about 45 minutes outside of Boston city limits. There is plenty of space in here to skate on including a snowman bowl, stairs, hubbas and rails. Entrance to the park ranges from $10-15 for a day pass.
Dracut Recreation Department: If you want to spend your time at a skate park that is exclusive to skaters, head here. They don’t allow bikers or roller bladers. Located in Dracut, this park is known for its boarders working on their skills together and has a bit of a skater community vibe. This park is also located about 45 minutes outside of the city.
Subliminal Skate Park: This is a park that holds several community events and always has something new going on for skaters including: monthly contests, skate lessons, pro demos and clinics. While bikers aren’t always allowed inside, they are on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sunday evenings. Subliminal Skate Park takes a bit longer to get to from Boston, about an hour but with all that is happening here it is well worth it.
Harborside Community Center and Skate Park: This park is the first official one built for skaters in the Boston area. The unique thing about this park is that there are several other recreational activities to choose from here. They have outdoor basketball courts and a sports field. Inside they also offer access to a gym, pool, dance studio, racquetball court, theater arts room and a dance studio.
Reservation Skate Park: Reservation skate park has much more of an urban feel than the parks listed above. This skate park is currently the closest one to the city of Boston and is located in the Hyde Park section. Reservation skate park has recently added some new elements and features lights for night time skating. Access to this park is free and there are also local soccer fields to take advantage of.
Charles River Skate Park: Although this one isn’t open yet, there are plans set for it to open to the public in December of 2013. The construction of this park was long delayed to the dismay of local skaters. Once completed, Boston area skaters will have a place to skate freely without worrying about fines inside the heart of Boston. This park is supposed to offer more than 40,000 square feet for skaters to enjoy. The construction of this park faced a significant amount of setbacks but those working on the project promise that skaters will get the gift of a new urban skate park this Christmas. The surrounding area of this park is also promising some development including new restaurants aimed at bringing in the skating crowd.
