A South African Football Association (Safa) statement said the accident happened near Burgersfort in the Limpopo region of the country.

“We are shocked and at a loss for words and as we speak, we are on our way to meet the family and find out what actually happened,” said Safa president, Kirsten Nematandani (pictured).

“We would like to pass our sincere condolences to the family, friends and the entire nation on this shocking development.”

Safa added further details will be released once Safa has met with the family and police.

The 40-year-old former national midfielder was appointed as an assistant by Bafana Bafana coach Gordon Igesund in July.

He played for FC Zurich in Switzerland from 1995 to 1996 and several other local clubs before his retirement in 2002.

He then worked as assistant coach at South African side SuperSport United until July, helping the team win several league titles.
