Mass Kidnapping in Kebbi: 25 Schoolgirls Taken, Staff Killed in Nigeria Attack

A disturbing new episode of violence has erupted in northwestern Nigeria where gunmen took 25 girls from a government-run high in Kebbi state early, on Monday, November 17, 2025. The attack on Maga Government Girls’ Secondary School, is the latest incident in an alarming series of mass school abductions by armed groups in Nigeria, which combines the already heightened fears for student safety, and increased pressure on government authorities, as well as rekindling international concern about the worsening crisis in the north and north/northwest of the country.

The Predawn Raid: What Happened?

Local authorities indicated that a group of armed men showed up at the school location around 4 a.m., and overpowered local security. School and community witnesses reported the armed the armed men appeared on motorcycles, armed with sophisticated weapons, began shooting indiscriminately as they entered the school compound. Once the armed men began shooting, they engaged the guards at the school, and then breached the girls’ dorms and abducted 25 students. At least one staff member, either a teacher or security guard, was killed during the raid, and other staff sustained injuries while trying to resist the attacks. After abducting the girls, the armed men fled into the thick forest surrounding the Maga district, making it difficult for local authorities or the insurgents family / friends to pursue them.

A coordinated search and rescue operation is now being conducted by local police, police and soldiers, and vigilante groups. The local authorities have deployed a helicopter and a drone to help observe the kidnappers’ movements.

Context: A Chilling Pattern of Kidnappings

The abduction reflects a sad development, but a continuing trend of mass abduction going back as far as 2014 in connection to the infamous Chibok kidnapping of over 270 girls, by the Boko Haram insurgents. The Kebbi stated is not immediately linked to the infamous Nigeria-based armed groups, Boko Haram, or their splinter groups, but security sources have stated that today’s “bandit” gangs who are, in fact, simply criminals seeking ransom, routinely target schools for mass abductions as a means of extracting ransom and control over the communities. Police have not ruled out the involvement of splinter jihadist factions, which, again highlights the blurred lines between terrorism, organized crime and the local conflict being experienced in parts of Nigeria.

These types of attacks have disrupted education throughout and for thousands of children, leading to school closures and prolonged trauma for parents and children, and devastating losses already under-prepared rural areas.

Government and Community Response

Nigerian President Bola Tinubu denounced the attack as “cowardly and barbaric,” and promised to use any and all effectively and promptly available resources to recover the kidnapped girls. In light of the harrowing event, security measures have been beefed up across Kebbi and its borders, and while government negotiators are focused on facilitating the kids’ safe release behind the scenes, officials have been apprehensive about going public with any potential ransom demands lest it encourage further kidnappings.

Community leaders are calling for prompt swift action from authorities, and an increased accountability from local and state police. Families and neighbors have been gathering at the school, still there seven days later, demanding answers and assistance to locate the missing children, reiterating their concerns for the safety of the girls in the rural area where many do not have a home, and forced to wonder if they are being held in a lawless area of forest.

International Reaction and Advocacy

The United Nations, international human rights organizations, and several country governments condemned the attack, and once again called for measures to protect children and education in Nigeria. Human Rights Watch and UNICEF characterized the raid as an assault “not just on innocence but on the right to education,” and urged security reforms and support for children who survived the trauma of the abduction.

The international community had engaged previously to assist Nigerian law enforcement and military in responding to and recovering children from mass kidnapping incidents. This entailed activities such as intelligence assistance, training, and another logistical support. However, the Nigerian side now insists that effectiveness against the sophisticated range of criminals and militants operating across the entire northern Nigeria requires closer regional cooperation at cross border levels and greater engagement with local communities on security issues.

Rescue Efforts and the Road Ahead

Search and rescue teams have been identifying travel corridors, and hideouts in the forests surrounding Danko and districts adjacent. The law enforcement and military is not communicating the type of information they may be receiving from distressed families; however they have called on community people to report and inform them on any sighting of the girls. On the other hand, Kebbi State recently announced new implementation supports for families impacted by the abductions such as counseling and emergency relief.

As the world keenly observes, another tragedy serves as another reminder for the ongoing difficulty faced by Nigeria in balancing education as a right of the child, rural security, and the ongoing effort to combat criminal and extremist actors.
