New York Mayor run: Eric Adams runs for reelection as independent

Notice: This article was last updated 12 months ago.

Thursday, New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced his intention to seek reelection as an independent, rather than as a Democrat, the party he had previously held.

The news broke just one day after a federal court vacated Adams’ corruption charges.

Mayor Adams released a video message on X in which he stated, “I will forego the Democratic primary for mayor and appeal directly to all New Yorkers as an independent candidate.” He continued by saying, “I have always put New York’s people before politics and party, and I always will.”

Recent surveys show that Adams is much behind the pack, with likely voters expressing concern about the city’s general situation, including affordability and subway crime.

Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who is running, is an impressive rival for Mayor Adams.

Cuomo resigned in 2021 in the wake of multiple sexual harassment accusations, which he denies.

Whoever takes first place in the Democratic primary will most likely go on to become the city’s mayor in November.
