Android 17 Preview: Google’s Next OS to Feature Material Expressive, “Min Mode”, & Advanced Security

San Francisco, October 31, 2025 — Google is about to launch Android 17, which is set to offer users the next boldest OS redesign offered in many years. A Developer Preview is expected to launch in November 2025 and a public version is anticipated in mid-2026. As leaks begin to gain traction, developers and tech insiders have begun to create discourse around features including a drastic Material 3 Expressive visual redesign, enhanced security, more powerful multitasking, and a new Always-On Display (AOD) mode called “Min Mode”.

This new AOD is perhaps the most revolutionary feature to launch with this update. The update is being called “Cinnamon Bun” and is meant to convey Google’s intention to blend design that is user-friendly with respectful innovation.

Major Features Coming to Android 17

Material 3 Expressive UI Redesign

Android 17 will deliver a sweeping redesign with Material 3 Expressive that includes new dynamic animations, a more layered approach to background blurring, modern iconography, and bolder color theming. System apps as well as third-party designs will be updated with more accessible options presented with a streamlined and modern look and feel that fits beautifully within phones, tablets, and foldables.

“Min Mode” Always-On Display

This is perhaps the most self-evident feature in Android 17. “Min Mode” will turn the current AOD into a hub for app interfaces to persist. While driving, for example, Google Maps could take over the lock screen and display there for easy viewing without having to wake the device. Other applications like fitness, media, and smart home devices will have dedicated low-power panel APIs that persist when the device is off (such as on a charging pad).

This technical approach mimics Apple’s Live Activities and Standby Mode but has more versatility to be used in more contexts beyond just for charging stations and a brief notification.

Advanced Multitasking and “Desktop Mode”

For many years, Google has hinted at the desktop-like Android experience; Android 17 brings features such as resizable app windows, taskbars, multi-monitor support, and split-screen layouts (90:10 for creative at last) that really deliver productivity, just plug in to make it happen. You should expect a Samsung DeX-style workflow baked right into the OS and not just hidden behind an OEM overlay.

Smarter Notifications & AI-Powered “Magic Actions”

Notifications will become even more useful and actionable, with notifications including “Magic Actions” powered by Gemini AI when more contextually relevant, that have their own contextual options built in to deliver specific functional output—like a ride (or updates on a ride) or a delivery or controlling smart devices from the lock screen and notifications menus.

Security and Privacy Improvements

Security is about to take a big leap: Intrusion Logging, which was offered in preview in Android 16, will become system-wide in Android 17, encrypting all logging in the device and allowing the user to see if any intrusion was attempted. Factory Reset Protection tightens the restrictions when a device is wiped, and new network permission settings, make it more restrictive when determining how apps access over local area networks, Bluetooth, or Wi-Fi.

Additional Upgrades: Connectivity, Accessibility, and Media

Beyond the surface visually, reports indicate that Android 17 will add features to Ultra-Wideband (UWB) capabilities to support mobile device payments, digital keys (transport, car rentals), and secure device handshake. Added customization includes lock screen widgets, ambient AOD options, and better filmed HDR brightness adjustments for advanced media use. Forced themed icons, more expanded dark mode and enhanced accessibility requests are viable options to help bring these into a more uniform, seamless experience across the operating system, and application use.

Release Timeline and the Future

Based on reports from developers, development roadmap and insiders, Android 17 Developer Preview will arrive for use in November 2025, with a global stable release expected in June 2026, with Pixel to get the new release first before any released by other OEMs. Previous quarterly platform releases (QPRs) may have a few features released early, as well, security improvements and “Min Mode” APIs can be expected to first be released expand the use of these on Pixel phones before eventually running on other qualifying Android devices.

The Bigger Picture: Real Time Updates, Technical Capability

Instead of the large yearly release schedule, Google is straying from it with changes every three months, including quick updates with new features. This new format puts support for developer flexibility, user input, and bug fixes front and center.

A new generation of Android that changes everything

Android 17 shows that Google’s dedication to improving mobile devices includes a focus on design and style combined with productivity and state-of-the-art security. “Min Mode,” Material 3 Expressive, intuitive multitasking at a desktop grade, and generative AI will drive the next generation of Android, and user excite, and developer rage is already very high.
